Computed locally with Web Crypto (MD5 in pure JS).

Choosing an algorithm

  • SHA-256 is the safe default for checksums, integrity checks and signatures.
  • MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for collision resistance — fine for legacy checksums, never for security.
  • Don't store passwords with plain hashes. Use a slow password hash such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt.
  • HMAC proves a message came from someone holding the secret key (e.g. webhook signatures).
